Soul purpose vs life purpose
Life purpose is about what you do — career, achievement, contribution. Soul purpose is deeper: it is about what the soul came to learn, resolve, and become in this particular incarnation. In Jyotish, the distinction is visible in the chart. The 10th house and its lord describe your worldly dharma — what you are here to accomplish in the outer world. But the soul's purpose is read from the Atmakaraka (the planet that has traveled the farthest in degrees in your chart), the D9 (Navamsha — the soul and marriage chart), and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
Ketu: what your soul already knows
Ketu, the South Node, represents where you have already been — the karma that is most deeply ingrained, the skills that feel almost effortless, and the patterns that keep pulling you backward. Many people feel comfort in Ketu's area of the chart because it is familiar. But staying there means repeating the past life, not evolving beyond it. Ketu in the 7th house means the soul has spent many previous lives focused on partnership — and this life asks it to develop independence. Ketu in the 2nd house means accumulated skill with money and speech, but this life requires moving toward Rahu's 8th house — deep transformation, inheritance, occult knowledge, and surrender.
Rahu: what your soul came to develop
Rahu, the North Node, is the direction your soul is meant to grow toward. It is uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and often feels wrong — because it is new territory for the soul. Rahu in the 1st house asks you to develop a strong, visible identity — to stop hiding behind relationships and step into your own presence. Rahu in the 10th house pulls the soul toward public achievement, career, and leadership — even if it terrifies you. The friction most people feel in their 20s and 30s is often the soul resisting Rahu's pull while defaulting back to the Ketu comfort zone.
Atmakaraka: the single most important planet for soul purpose
The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in your chart (regardless of sign). It is considered the king of your chart — the planet most representative of your soul's current incarnation and what it is specifically here to master. If your Atmakaraka is Saturn, the soul is here to develop discipline, patience, service, and the capacity to endure. If it is Venus, the soul came to learn the right relationship to beauty, desire, and love — either by over-pursuing it and learning its limits, or by transcending attachment to it. If it is Mars, themes of courage, anger, and right action are central to the soul's curriculum this lifetime.
The D20 (Vimshamsha) — spiritual path
For those on an explicitly spiritual path, the D20 divisional chart reveals the specific nature of that path. The 12th house in the D20 shows the form of liberation the soul is moving toward. Planets in the 9th house of the D20 show what spiritual practices, teachers, or traditions will most activate the soul's growth. Most standard Kundli readings do not analyze the D20 at all — which is why they often miss the deepest layer of what someone is here for.
How to read your own soul purpose
Start with three questions: Where is Ketu? (what you are over-indexed in from past lives.) Where is Rahu? (what you are being pulled to develop now.) What is your Atmakaraka? (what the soul is here to master above all else.) These three together sketch the outline of your soul's purpose in this incarnation.
