The D60 chart — the past life chart
The Shastiamsha (D60) is the 60th divisional chart in Vedic astrology — a subdivision of each sign into 60 parts of 30 minutes each. It is one of the hardest charts to calculate accurately because it requires a very precise birth time. The D60 is considered by classical authorities to reveal the karma accumulated across previous lifetimes. Planets that are strong in the D60 show areas where the soul has built up significant merit or significant debt. Planets that are afflicted in the D60 show where karmic damage needs to be cleared in this lifetime.
Ketu: the most direct past life indicator
Ketu, the South Node of the Moon, is the primary past life indicator in a Vedic chart. Ketu shows what the soul has already mastered — the skills, the experiences, the knowledge that feel almost effortless because the soul has already lived through them. But Ketu also shows the trap: the soul keeps defaulting to what it already knows instead of moving toward what it came here to develop. Ketu in the 2nd house shows a soul that has spent previous lives accumulating wealth and knowledge of traditions — and must now move toward Rahu in the 8th house of transformation and surrender. Ketu in the 10th house shows a soul that was publicly accomplished in previous lives — and may now feel a strange dissatisfaction with worldly achievement that it cannot explain.
The 12th house — the karmic residue
The 12th house in Vedic astrology rules isolation, foreign lands, spiritual retreat, loss, and liberation. But in the context of past life karma, the 12th house shows the karmic residue from previous incarnations — what the soul is still carrying and needs to release. Planets in the 12th house often indicate unresolved karma from past lives that is still generating effects in this one. Saturn in the 12th house often indicates past life debt related to duty and responsibility. Mars in the 12th can indicate violence or anger in a previous life that is now being worked through as an internal struggle.
The D12 (Dvadashamsha) — lineage and ancestral karma
The D12 chart reveals the karma connected to family lineage — what has been passed down from parents, grandparents, and ancestors. This is distinct from past life karma (which is the soul's individual karma across its own incarnations) but equally important. The D12 shows what the soul inherited by being born into a specific family — including the blessings, the wounds, and the patterns that have been running in the lineage for generations. The 9th house of the D12 shows the father's lineage. The 4th house shows the mother's lineage.
Planetary yogas that indicate past life actions
Certain yogas in the main chart directly indicate past life merit or karma. Dhana yogas (wealth combinations) in the chart often indicate generosity in past lives. Raja yogas (royal combinations) suggest past lives of leadership, spiritual practice, or significant merit. Conversely, curses described in classical texts — Pitru Dosha (ancestral curse), Graha Dosha, Kala Sarpa Yoga (all planets between Rahu and Ketu) — indicate patterns of harm or injustice from previous incarnations that are still running their effects in this birth.
