Vedic vs Western astrology — what is different?
The core difference is the zodiac. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons and the Earth's relationship to the Sun. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — the actual positions of stars and constellations in the sky at the time of birth. Because the Earth's axis has shifted over thousands of years (a phenomenon called precession), there is currently about a 23-degree difference between the two systems. This means your Vedic Sun sign is likely different from your Western Sun sign. Most Indian astrologers consider the sidereal positions more accurate for predicting events and timing karma.
How to read a Vedic birth chart
A Vedic birth chart (Kundli) is typically shown in either the North Indian diamond format or the South Indian square grid format. Both show the same 12 houses (Bhavas) with different visual layouts. The Lagna (Ascendant) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth — defines the 1st house and anchors the entire chart. From the Lagna, all 12 houses are counted in order. The 1st house represents the self and body. The 4th: home, mother, and emotional roots. The 7th: partnerships and marriage. The 10th: career, reputation, and dharma.
The 9 planets of Vedic astrology
Vedic astrology uses 9 planets: Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are not used in classical Jyotish. Each planet has specific significations, owns specific signs, becomes exalted in one sign and debilitated in another, and behaves differently depending on which house it occupies and which planets aspect it.
Planetary yogas — combinations that define your life
A yoga in Vedic astrology is a specific combination of planets, houses, or lords that creates a distinctive effect. Gaja Kesari Yoga (Jupiter and Moon in a specific angular relationship) indicates wisdom, honor, and lasting recognition. Budha Aditya Yoga (Sun and Mercury in the same house) creates intellectual sharpness and communication ability. Chandra Mangala Yoga (Moon and Mars in conjunction) gives emotional drive that converts into material success. There are hundreds of yogas described in classical texts. Divisional charts: where the depth lives

Dasha system: Vedic astrology's timing mechanism
What makes Vedic astrology uniquely powerful for prediction is the Vimshottari Dasha system — a 120-year cycle of planetary periods (Mahadashas) allocated to each planet. Each Mahadasha lasts between 6 and 20 years and activates the themes of that planet in your life. Inside each Mahadasha are Antardashas (sub-periods) of approximately 1-2 years each.
